As a kid, the women who were the beauties I aspired to be were 40's pin ups, "Old Hollywood" movie stars. I looked up to women with dark hair, smart eyes, sweet smiles and some sass- they were like me. Bettie exemplified that image. Later, when I was growing up in the punk scene, Bettie was undoubtedly the quintessential woman- who every girl wanted to be and every boy wanted to be with. Girlish and good natured, but with the ability to be wild and fierce. The symbol of a strong sexy woman.
Her photos might have been popular or even transcended time in part because of their raciness and sensuality, but she is an everlasting icon that is loved by us all because of the personality that came through those eyes. In all her photos, she looks like she is having fun and owning whatever she does. Bettie, thank you for being a great example of a brunette beauty, a gorgeous gal with a sense of humor and a winning smile. I'm no Bettie Page, but I make a nice Heidi.
